Job Search Techniques

Did you just not long ago graduate or are you graduating soon? Possibly you are experiencing difficulty finding a job because you have either too much or too little experience. No matter what the problem seems to be, here are several executive job search techniques you can put to use.

It is vital to create a quality resume which highlights the qualifications and skills that are crucial for each job that you are applying to. Mention the achievements that are pertinent, and if you can list some quantifiable results. Once you have gotten done making this resume, read it over a few times to check for errors, and then send it to a few trusted contacts for feedback. Your resume can be one to three pages, but if possible, try to keep it down to 1 or 2 pages. An increasingly crucial section of the resume will be the cover letter. It must be structured, concise, and immediately capture the attention of the screeners. A helpful cover letter format is the “T”, as you list the job requirements on the left and your applicable qualifications on the right.

It is of the highest importance that your resume displays all the skills that you can provide a company without stretching the truth. If you don’t try this, you may be at risk of being automatically screened out by a computer system. Many companies have been forced to resort to this due to a high number of applicants that they get for every job posting. You also need to be certain that you always follow up with prospective employers so that they are aware you are interested in the position.

If you apply online, often it feels like you are just throwing your resume into a black hole. To circumvent this, get ahold of your network and strive to find a contact within the company. That person can then ship your resume immediately to the hiring manager, getting past the online application process. This can give you a great benefit when it comes to securing a job interview and subsequent offer. Many businesses have employee referral bonuses: this might be a plus for both you and your contacts, so don’t be afraid to get ahold of them and ask.

When you arrive to the interview, you need to put your best foot forward. The perfect way to accomplish this is to study. Learn about the business you are interviewing for. Practice your replies to standard interview and behavioral questions. You must make a good impression by arriving early, shaking hands firmly, maintaining good eye contact, and utilizing good listening skills. Try to answer queries in a straightforward manner, ask smart questions, find out what your next actions should be, and follow up with a thank you email or letter.

Even if your interviews did not end in a offer, always transmit a thank you email or letter to the hiring manager. It is probable that you were the second best candidate, and you want them to keep you in his or her thoughts in case another position opens up. Also, you may be able to acquire a new contact, or the manager might be able to give you a new lead. If your interview does lead to an offer, make sure that the job, people, culture, etc. are good for your personality before accepting the position. It might be preferable to keep looking than to end up in a job that is unsuitable for you.

It’s that time again! The holiday season. If you are currently unemployed and searching for a new job, you may find yourself tempted to do what many job searchers do, and put your search on hold from Thanksgiving until we ring in the New Year. But if you do that, you’ll be missing one of the best times of the year to look for a job. That’s right! It’s a myth that the holidays are a bad time for job searching.

The truth is that the holidays are a great time to increase your job search efforts. Not only will you have less competition (from all the job searchers who actually bought the myth and have taken a break from job hunting), but the holidays offer you excellent networking opportunities that you just don’t have the rest of the year. And, of course, hiring doesn’t just stop simply because it is the holiday season. There are employers seeking to fill key spots or use hiring budgets before the end of the year, and with other job seekers busy with holiday activities, you will be well positioned to promote yourself as the perfect new hire.

If you decide to continue with your job search right through the holiday season, there are a few simple steps you can take to maximize the returns on your time and effort.

First, remember that networking is almost always the single most effective job search technique. You will likely be invited to many holiday parties and events. Even an event for your children can be an opportunity to casually network and make people aware that you are in the job market. Job leads can come from almost any source, so make sure to attend family parties, church events, and holiday parties held by associations and civic/community groups. Of course, you should also go to get-togethers held by friends. If you can fit them in your schedule, go to them all. While socializing, the topic of work will come up. It always does. And when you are asked, talk about your job search and subtly make it clear that you would appreciate any advice, ideas, or referrals. A few days later, make certain that you follow up with everyone you spoke with. Send a thank you note to anyone and everyone who offers any help, no matter how small.

Have you lost touch with old colleagues, friends, or distant family? The holidays give you a great reason to reestablish contact with them. If you can find their mailing address, send a friendly holiday card and brief note letting them know you’ve been thinking of them. If you don’t have a mailing address, maybe you can find the person using Facebook or LinkedIn and send them a message that way. But be subtle! There is no reason to blurt out during this first contact that you are looking for a job. Give it a couple of weeks and then contact them again, maybe to meet for coffee or to catch up by phone. Again, when you are asked about your work you can simply let them know you are in the market for opportunities and ask if they have any suggestions or might be able to think of someone that it might be helpful for you to talk with.

Of course, really effective networking is a continual activity and you’ll want to nurture the contacts you have made. Now is a good time to expand the list of people that you send a holiday card to. You can include recruiters you’ve spoken to, employers who have interviewed you, and of course everyone that you’ve been meeting and reestablishing relationships with at all the holiday events and parties. Very few job seekers actually do this, so it is a great way to stand out and make yourself memorable.

Finally, consider volunteer opportunities. There are usually many chances to get out and volunteer during the holidays. Of course, any volunteer work is a great way to get out of the house and build new networking contacts. If the work is related to your actual career goals and professional expertise, all the better. As a side benefit, helping others is rewarding. Job searching is often a very stressful activity, and as you may have experienced yourself, many people have a tendency to feel down and anxious about looking for work during the holidays. Volunteering is a great way to get away from it and forget your troubles for a short time.

The bottom line: Don’t buy into the myth. Keep that job search in high gear over the holiday season. You may land a new job before the New Year. But even if you don’t, when January 1 comes and goes, you’ll be far, far ahead of all your competition and will be top-of-mind for all of your contacts when they hear of a job opportunity.

Marketing

The biggest error that most newcomers to internet marketing make is to find their product first and then seek a market for it. They devote a lot of time looking for new undiscovered niches. This is actually the wrong way to go about it and unfortunately is a waste of both time and energy, particularly when you are just starting out. It should actually be the reverse.

The most effective method is to find first a market that you want to focus on and secondly find a product for this market.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A NICHE?

It is a terminology frequently utilize by web marketers and it is defined as being a unique group of individuals who are searching the internet for an answer to a specific query or problem. Basically it is a particular section of a market.

Unfortunately beginners devote considerable time and effort trying to find brand new and undiscovered niches. There are even some online products promising to show you “how to find an untapped niche”. Please don’t even think about doing this! Only once you get more established and understand a lot more about internet marketing that you can then contemplate experimenting with more diverse niches but certainly not as a newbie.

When trying to find a niche, you can first determine an “overall market” and then extract a particular section of that market. You will then create a website around this specific segment of the market.

There are three major markets that are widely prominent and have a huge amount of individuals eager to purchase their products and services.

The truth is that you could spend your entire online career within these 3 markets and never have to worry about finding a small untapped niche. In essence it is the basic law of supply and demand. If you can find what people are searching for and you can then supply it you will be in business for ever. So why make it difficult on yourself?

The big 3 markets are:

Health
Lifestyle
Wealth

Those huge markets have tons of niches and can be broken down further as follow

1) Health

Increase energy, Loose weight, Diet, healthy eating, skincare, medical procedures, quit smoking, headache relief, children’s health, hair loss…

2) Lifestyle

Mind body and spirit, dating, personal development, computer games, how to sell your house, online study courses, self improvement, pets, relationship advice, spirituality, pets, motivational, DIY, divorce, etc.

3) Wealth

Now scrutinize closely the niches found in these 3 markets. Is there any subject that you are passionate about, excites you or that you are already family with? Choosing a subject that you like is extremely important as it will help to keep you motivated.

Once you have found your particular niche you can then build your website around it. Remember you only need to do well at one niche to have a successful online business.

WHERE TO FIND PRODUCTS

Among the most popular are: Commission junction, Sharesale, ClickBank (biggest place for digital product), Clixgalore, HD publishing, Market health.
